"A king!" my little readers will say immediately.
No, children, you are mistaken. Once upon a time there was a piece of wood. - Ch. 1 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)
- Centuries ago there lived —
- Might it be that this piece of wood has learned to weep and cry like a child? I can hardly believe it. Here it is — a piece of common firewood, good only to burn in the stove, the same as any other. Yet — might someone be hidden in it?
- Ch. 1 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)
- "Good day, Mastro Antonio," said Geppetto. "What are you doing on the floor?"
"I am teaching the ants their A B C's."
"Good luck to you!"- Ch. 2 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)
- When poverty shows itself, even mischievous boys understand what it means.
- Ch. 8 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)
- Don't listen to those who promise you wealth overnight, my boy. As a rule they are either fools or swindlers!
- Ch. 13 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)
- I say that a wise doctor, when he does not know what he is talking about, should know enough to keep his mouth shut.

- Ch. 17 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)

- HERE LIES
– urlò Pinocchio, ricominciando a piangere.
And now what are we to do here in the dark?"
"Wait until the Shark has digested us both, I suppose."
"But I don't want to be digested," shouted Pinocchio, starting to sob.
"Neither do I," said the Tunny, "but I am wise enough to think that if one is born a fish, it is more dignified to die under the water than in the frying pan." - Ch. 34 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)
- "And now what are we to do here in the dark?"
- In this world of ours we must be kind and courteous to others, if we want to find kindness and courtesy in our own days of trouble.
- Ch. 34 (tr. Carol Della Chiesa, 1926)
