A semiconductor device which when placed behind a lens and has an image formed on it's surface spatially and temporally samples the charge generated from the incident light. These samples form an internal representation of the incident light. Types of image sensors that are common are CCDs, CIS (Contact Image sensors), APS (Active Pixel devices) and CIS (CMOS Image Sensors)

Why is there no rolling shutter when using a mechanical shutter?
So I know it might not be the best place to ask this question, but maybe some of you are familiar with the mechanics of digital mirrorless cameras and the technology of CMOS sensors. I don't quite understand why electronic image sensors, that create…

Why is it so expensive to produce cameras for non visible light?
Typical consumer cameras can capture wavelength of 390-700 nm 400-1050 nm . But why is it so difficult and expensive to produce cameras for infrared, ultraviolet, hard x-rays, etc.? The only thing which differs them are the wavelength and the energy…

How can jitter be higher than the clock period?
I'm trying to figure out if I could use an oscillator IC for this AR0134CS image sensor or if I need a crystal oscillator circuit, keeping in mind the signal will go through a PLL in a microcontroller first. Looking at the datasheet it lists the…

Are silicon microbolometers inherently more expensive than conventional CMOS light sensors?
We're finally starting to see practical thermal imaging sensors ( microbolometers ) entering the consumer market. However, they are still vastly more expensive than comparable visible imaging sensors. The most basic 384x288 17µm pixel (i.e., 32mm 2…

How are the micro lenses installed on the CMOS pixel?
I work as a CMOS image sensor quality engineer, but I haven't really looked into the manufacturing side of things. I’d love to learn how CMOS sensors are actually produced. How are microlenses actually placed on top?

Raw access to CMOS image sensor?
I am interested in developing an idea using CMOS sensors, and I was wondering if I could get some pointers (I don't know much about image sensors) First , my understanding is that CMOS image sensors can (in theory) access pixels one at a time --…

Interfacing with MIPI CSI-2 camera sensors like the Omnivision OV2732?
CSI-2 is used in pretty much every smartphone however I'm struggling to find much information on how most companies receive and control CSI-2 sensors. I understand there are NDAs. This is not for a hobbyist project, however I'm a beginner on this…

Understanding optical parameters of image sensors
I noticed that image sensor manufacturers provide some optical characteristics in different formats. I wish to know how to interpret that information. Sensitivity is characterized in \$\dfrac{V}{lx \cdot s}\$ for S11639 and TCD1201 , which is…

Testing the linearity of a CMOS image sensor
The EMVA 1288 standard guides how to measure the linearity of a digital image sensor, i.e., if the digital number from a pixel changes linearly to the incident light intensity. The procedure includes a measurement of the incident light intensity,…

Noise at 2^n transitions
I am sampling a video signal from a linear imager. I noticed when the illumination is just at the intensity when the ADC increases by another MSB bit at the output, the noise occurs. That is, when ADC transitions from 0111 to 1000, 01111 to 10000…
